PETALING JAYA: A young inmate has found a new sense of hope in an unlikely place.
Behind bars, the 21-year-old man identified only as Ismail is now dreaming of furthering his studies in the field of aerospace, having obtained 6As and 1B in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
“I feel that I have been given new hope for my future,” he said in an interview, recalling the moment he received the results in March.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was shocked by the results. I had only expected to do well in Bahasa Melayu and History.”
Ismail, a student at the Kluang Integrity School in Johor, is currently serving his sentence at Kluang Prison.
The Prisons Department did not disclose his offence or jail term.
For now, the SPM result slip is more than just a piece of paper for Ismail. It has given him a new outlook on his future and the belief that his past does not have to define him.
He attributed the SPM results to encouragement, guidance and prayers from his teachers, prison officers, parents and friends.
The teachers, he added, had always guided the students to ensure that their studies were not affected.
“The school management and prison officers were also very supportive, while my friends constantly encouraged me to stay motivated,” he said.
He hopes to build a better life one day through stable employment.
Ismail’s story reflects the broader success of correctional institutions for young offenders such as Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools nationwide, which recorded a 100% passing rate in the SPM examination for four consecutive years since 2022.
Prisons Department Correctional Division director Nora Musa said the achievement showed that education remains one of the most effective rehabilitation tools in helping young inmates rebuild their lives.
“Beyond the examination results, what matters most is the transformation these students have undergone. They have not only gained knowledge but also confidence, become disciplined and have hope for the future,” she said.
Nora said the achievement was the result of a close collaboration between the Prisons Department and the Education Ministry, ensuring that students at Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools followed the same national curriculum as those in mainstream schools.
Besides formal education, she said students would go through structured daily routines encompassing character development and counselling, among others.
The department also provides pathways for former students to pursue higher education, undergo skills training and secure employment through collaborations to facilitate their reintegration into society, she said.
Since 2018, a total of 299 former students from Integrity Schools and Henry Gurney Schools have furthered their studies at higher education institutions and skills training centres.
Among the institutions they have enrolled in are polytechnics, community colleges, Institut Kemahiran Mara, Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara, Institut Latihan Perindustrian, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, as well as private colleges and the Advanced Technology Training Centre.
“This year alone, 34 former students have furthered their studies, a significant increase compared with 12 in the previous year,” she said.
According to Nora, the achievement showed that education would open doors for young offenders to prove that everyone deserves a second chance.
As Ismail puts it: “If we fall along the way, we must get back up and keep moving forward until we succeed.”
He hoped his story would inspire other young people who may be going through difficult periods in their lives.
