KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has met telecommunications company representatives over the viral issue of influencer Khairul Aming, who alleged that his personal phone bill details were leaked online.
Earlier Tuesday (July 21), it was reported that Khairul asked in a social media post how such information could be accessed by others and publicly disclosed.
Fahmi then responded that he met with the telco, which will in turn contact Khairul.
"I will also ask MCMC (the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to get a full report," Fahmi told a press conference at the International Regulatory Conference 2026 here.
"This is quite worrying because the complaint I read in the Threads post by Khairul gives the impression (that) an individual... (has) access to private information... and to the inventory or system owned by a telco."
Fahmi urged the public to lodge reports with MCMC at aduan.mcmc.gov.my if they experience similar incidents, because spreading personally identifiable information (PII) is an offence under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
"Follow-up action can be taken based on the Act. But we ask (those affected) to lodge a police report and also with MCMC," he added.
The controversy began after Khairul posted on Threads questioning how details of his phone bill could be accessed and publicly disclosed.
The individual who posted the purported details stated an overdue amount and hinted at the influencer's prepaid credit usage and digital purchases.
"I feel like telling KA (Khairul Aming) that he has an overdue bill... I wonder if he notices, given that he has so many accounts. His line might get barred soon," the user wrote.
Khairul said the amount of the bill was not the main issue, but it was his personal business.
"What’s frightening is how you could know my phone bill details and then post them publicly. This is my personal data," he said.
The post drew attention from social media users, many of whom also questioned the safety and confidentiality of customer data if the information was indeed obtained improperly.
