KANGAR: The carcass of a dolphin weighing an estimated 120kg was found washed ashore at Pantai Kurung Tengar here on Monday afternoon (July 20).

Perlis Fisheries Director Muhammad Nur Ashry Bassari said the department received a report from a member of the public regarding the discovery of the dolphin carcass, measuring about 222cm in length, at about 5pm.

"An inspection found no visible injuries on the dolphin's body. Samples were also collected for DNA analysis before the carcass was buried in accordance with the prescribed procedures," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 21).

Muhammad Nur Ashry said the dolphin species is listed under the Schedule of Endangered Fish Species 1999 pursuant to the Fisheries Act 1985.

He also urged fishermen to remain vigilant of the presence of marine mammals in the state's waters and not to disturb or endanger the animals.

"We thank the community and members of the public for providing information on the discovery of this dolphin carcass.

"The Perlis State Fisheries Office will continue to intensify awareness programmes on the importance of conserving fisheries biodiversity, particularly marine mammals in the state," he said. – Bernama
