PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across nine states and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, effective until 9am on Monday (July 20).
In the northern region, the weather alert covers the entire state of Perlis. Affected areas in Kedah include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan and Pendang.
On the east coast, severe weather is expected in Tumpat, Kota Bharu, Bachok, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang in Kelantan, alongside Besut, Setiu and Hulu Terengganu in Terengganu. Pahang will also see storms in Lipis and Jerantut.
In the central and southern parts of the peninsula, the warning covers Kuala Selangor, Klang, Petaling, Kuala Langat and Sepang in Selangor, as well as WP Putrajaya.
The alert also extends to Negeri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson and Rembau), the entire state of Melaka, and across the sea to East Malaysia, affecting Betong (Kabong), Sarikei (Sarikei) and Mukah (Tanjung Manis and Daro) in Sarawak.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 6.35am on Monday.
