KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of fans are expected to gather at several locations across the capital to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, with Dataran Merdeka serving as the main venue featuring a giant outdoor screen.
The event, organised by Yayasan Prihatin Nasional in collaboration with the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters and several government agencies, is expected to bring football fans together in a festive atmosphere.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the public screening would begin at 8pm tonight and is expected to end in the early hours of Monday.
“We also hope the turnout will help the programme earn recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records,” he said after taking part in the Unity Merdeka Run at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
Also present were Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Azani Omar and 16 members of the Crime Journalists Association (CiJA).
Comm Fadil said about 2,000 participants joined in the 5km run.
He added that the programme also featured a lucky draw, with a motorcycle offered as the grand prize.
“This programme serves as a platform to strengthen ties between the police and the community while fostering a spirit of togetherness.
“It will culminate with public screenings of the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at several locations across Kuala Lumpur, with Dataran Merdeka serving as the main venue,” he said.
