MELAKA: Eight flood mitigation projects worth a combined RM1.456bil are being rolled out across the state to strengthen the drainage infrastructure and reduce the risk of recurring floods, the Melaka Legislative Assembly was told.
Melaka housing, local government, climate change and disaster management committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said two of the projects were currently at the design stage.
He said these projects are phase one of the Sungai Melaka flood mitigation project, valued at RM40mil and the RM450mil Sungai Baru flood mitigation project in Masjid Tanah.
Rais said another six projects were under implementation, including phase one of the Alor Gajah flood mitigation project, with a contract value of RM17mil, and the Bandar Jasin and Bandar Merlimau projects, costing RM35mil and RM17mil respectively.
"The remaining projects are the Sungai Putat flood mitigation project, valued at RM50mil; the Sungai Duyong flood mitigation project (RM117mil); and the RM529mil upgrading of the Krubong-Durian Tunggal flood retention pond into a dual-purpose facility for flood mitigation and the state's water supply,” he said on Wednesday (July 15).
Rais said the Melaka Drainage and Irrigation Department had also submitted an application under Rolling Plan Two for 2027 of the 13th Malaysia Plan to implement the Sungai Ayer Salak flood mitigation project in Melaka Tengah district.
"The proposed project is estimated to cost RM154mil," he said.
Rais said a RM250,000 feasibility study was also being conducted in Bukit Rambai to identify the most suitable technical solution before a physical flood mitigation project could be implemented in the area.
"Apart from physical projects, RM500,000 has also been allocated for flood mitigation feasibility studies to serve as the basis for long-term planning,” he said.
