KUCHING: Malaysia needs a legislative framework to regulate the transport of carbon dioxide across borders for carbon capture and storage, says Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
He said Sarawak had received applications from companies in Japan and Singapore to store their carbon in the state's CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation and storage) reservoirs.
"The carbon will have to transported to Sarawak. But there is no regulatory framework for how to bring the carbon here," he told reporters after opening the Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference here on Wednesday (July 15).
Abang Johari said he brought up this matter at the National Energy Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur earlier on Wednesday (July 15).
"We have our own state CCUS laws, but there must be coordination with the Federal Government," he added.
