Perlis Bersatu secretary quits party, says will remain Senator

KANGAR: Perlis Senator Azahar Hassan has announced his resignation from Bersatu, quitting the party and relinquishing all positions he currently holds, including as the state party secretary, with immediate effect.

Azahar said the decision was made after careful consideration, thorough assessment and deep reflection on the current developments.

"I believe this decision is based on my principles, stand and personal considerations in order to continue the direction of the struggle that I believe in," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 9).

He stressed that his decision was made with respect for Bersatu and its members who had stood together through various challenges throughout his involvement with the party.

He added that although he had resigned from the party, he would continue his duties as a senator to fulfil his responsibilities towards the people of Perlis.

He expressed his appreciation to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the party's leadership at all levels, and its members for the trust, support and cooperation extended to him during his tenure.

"All the experiences, contributions, friendships and opportunities to serve that were given will always be remembered and appreciated," he said.

Azahar was appointed Senator by the Perlis state assembly on Oct 10, 2024.

His term is expected to end on Sept 9 next year.

Earlier, Mentri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah and state executive councillor Marzita Mansor have announced their resignations as members of Bersatu’s supreme leadership council to allow them to focus fully on the state administration.
