Johor polls: Cops open four probe papers from 17 complaints received on July 7 and 8


JOHOR BARU: Police have opened four investigation papers (IPs) from 17 reports received on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 7 and 8) in connection with the 16th Johor state election.

State police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said one IP is under Section 4A(1) of the Election Offences Act 1954, for promoting feelings of ill will or hostility.

Another IP is under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, regarding defamation and the improper use of network facilities or services.

"Two IPs are under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief resulting in the loss of or damage to property," Comm Ab Rahaman said in a statement on Thursday (July 9).

Cumulatively, Johor police received 73 election-related police reports from June 27 to Wednesday.

"In all, we have opened 22 IPs for the election-related offences in this timeframe," Comm Ab Rahaman added.

He said 884 permit applications were received for ceramah and campaign activities on Tuesday and Wednesday, with 838 approved.

In total, 4,053 out of 4,368 permits were approved from June 27 to Wednesday, he added.

Comm Ab Rahaman also said that police monitored all political programmes and activities to ensure compliance with the law and to maintain peace and order.
