KUALA LUMPUR: Five individuals, including four civil servants from a public pre-university institution in Perlis, have been remanded over allegations of soliciting and accepting about RM25,000 in bribes.
The suspects, comprising a company owner and four civil servants, are believed to have sought and received the bribes in return for helping a construction, food supply and maintenance services company secure government procurement jobs at the institution worth about RM100,000.
Magistrate Mohd Amiruldin Roslan issued a four-day remand order until July 10 after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) applied at the Kangar Magistrate’s Court.
Sources said the five suspects – three men and two women in their 40s – were detained between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday (July 7) when they turned up to give their statements at the Perlis MACC office.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have conspired in the offence between 2023 and 2024.
“The four civil servants are believed to have received bribes ranging from about RM2,000 to RM10,000 for each project from the company owner, with a total of 16 projects obtained,” the source said.
When contacted, Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
He added that the commission was determined to put an end to abuse of power and had effectively crippled a cartel allegedly monopolising the award of contracts to contractors at the educational institution.
