IPOH: Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially launched the Sultan Nazrin Shah 69 Commando Camp at Ulu Kinta here on Tuesday (July 7).
Present were Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Raja Muda Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and Raja Di Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail were also present.
In his speech, Saifuddin said the new headquarters of the 69 Commando unit reflects the commitment of the government to strengthening national security capabilities in the face of complex threats.
He said the facility symbolises continued investment by the government in providing world-class infrastructure and training facilities to ensure elite security forces remain fully prepared to defend the peace of Malaysia.
He noted that the latest ranking of Malaysia at 12th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index was a testament to the dedication and readiness of national security forces.
“The 69 Commando had built a distinguished record since its establishment in 1969, playing key roles in major security operations," he said.
He cited historical operations including the fight against the communist insurgency, the Al-Ma’unah incident in 2000, Ops Daulat in Lahad Datu in 2013 and the special assignment following the MH17 tragedy in 2014.
“The unit had also been instrumental in counter-terrorism operations, hostage rescue missions and responding to high-risk security threats, consistently serving on the front lines whenever the nation’s sovereignty and security were challenged,” he added.
Saifuddin said the government has invested over RM206mil to develop the camp on an approximately 338ha (835-acre) site.
“The camp, which was handed over to the police in 2024, comprises modern training, operational and administrative facilities designed to support the unit’s long-term development," he said.
He described the camp as a strategic national investment that would serve as a catalyst for enhancing the capabilities of the 69 Commando for decades to come.
He also paid tribute to serving personnel and veterans of the 69 Commando for their sacrifices and dedication. He expressed confidence that the camp would become a lasting symbol of excellence and courage.
