RM26mil in illegal alcohol seized in Kuching

PETALING JAYA: More than RM26.6mil worth of untaxed alcohol was seized in a recent police raid in Sarawak, says Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri.

The Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director said the seizure followed a special operation conducted by the department’s Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence Unit last Friday.

“More than 75,000 cartons of untaxed alcohol were found at the premises, along with three shipping containers filled with illegal liquor and two forklifts.

“The total value of the seizures is estimated at RM26,624,618,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said three Indonesian men in their mid-30s were also detained during the raid at a premises in Kuching.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act for the illegal harbouring, concealment or possession of uncustomed or prohibited goods.

He said the operation was part of the police’s ongoing crackdown on smuggling and the illegal distribution of untaxed goods.

Meanwhile, Comm Mohd Yusri said a total of 199 raids had been carried out between Jan 1 and July 4 this year.

The raids led to the arrest of 374 suspects for various offences, including smuggling and illegal e-waste operations. The department recorded seizures totalling about RM258.5mil, he added.
