Cops: College did not do background check on suspect in student sexual assault case

SHAH ALAM: Preliminary investigations into the alleged sexual assault of two 15-year-old male college students showed that the suspect's employer did not conduct a background check before hiring him, police said.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Sarudin Samah said when contacted on Sunday (July 5) that the suspect had been employed at a vocational college in the Glenmarie area for the last two years.

"Based on initial information from college staff, the management did not conduct a criminal background check during the recruitment process and was therefore unaware that the suspect had a record involving sexual offences.

"Statements from the management will be recorded to verify this information and assist with the investigation," he said.

Two witnesses including the suspect's father have had their statements recorded, he added.

"Statements from other relevant witnesses are currently being arranged to complete the investigation.

"The suspect remains under remand, and investigations are ongoing.

"These include completing witness statements, gathering digital evidence and obtaining medical reports before the investigation paper is referred to prosecutors for further instructions," he said.

On Friday (July 3), two students lodged reports alleging they were assaulted by an individual believed to be an employee of the institution.

"The first victim alleged that he was molested in the restroom of the college dormitory, while the second claimed he was sodomised at the suspect's house in Section 18, Shah Alam," ACP Sarudin said in a statement on Saturday (July 4).

The suspect was arrested on Saturday.
