A GOOD luck wish from Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching to Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman drew the attention of fellow MPs after the court’s decision on his graft appeal was postponed to July 13.
Teo offered the remark as she responded to Syed Saddiq’s question on the rising sophistication of online scams and the role of social media platforms in enabling fraudulent activity.
“Good to see you here, wish you all the best on the 13th of July,” she said, referring to the rescheduled Federal Court decision involving Syed Saddiq’s appeal in his Armada funds graft case.
Syed Saddiq was asking the ministry over the rapid evolution of scam operations, warning that artificial intelligence is now being used to create highly convincing impersonations, including voice and video calls that can mimic family members.
Earlier, Teo said that more than 11,600 items of false or deepfake content have been taken down from nearly 12,500 complaints related to AI misuse received by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) since 2024.
She said the deepfake content was removed following takedown requests submitted by MCMC to social media platform providers.
She said that complaints over deepfake content have surged more than eightfold, from 917 in 2024 to 3,612 in 2025, and 7,967 as of June 15 this year.
To curb the growing misuse of AI, Teo said the government, through the Risk Mitigation Code under the Online Safety Act 2025, requires licensed social media platforms to put in place risk mitigation measures, including those targeting AI-generated content.
