Oldest sun bear Amaco dies at 33

Rest peacefully: In a farewell note, Amaco was thanked by Dr Wong for the memories, lessons and joy it brought the centre.

KOTA KINABALU: Amaco, the oldest sun bear at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) in Sandakan, has died at the age of 33, surpassing the average wild bear’s lifespan.

The male sun bear, which spent a large part of its life in captivity prior to being rescued, was found dead last Wednesday morning, said BSBCC founder and chief executive officer Dr Wong Siew Te.

“With a heavy heart, BSBCC would like to share the sad news that Amaco has died,” he stated on social media.

He said over the past few weeks, Amaco’s health and appetite had declined, causing the bear to be weak and having difficulty standing.

“Blood tests indicated worsening kidney function and anemia,” Dr Wong added.

The sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is a small, solitary bear native to the tropical forests of South-East Asia and generally has an average lifespan of up to 25 years in the wild.

Known for its jet-black coat and a distinct, crescent-shaped orange or cream chest patch, it is the smallest of all bear species and is highly adapted for climbing trees.

Dr Wong said a post-mortem examination revealed significant congestion in Amaco’s lungs and liver, adding that these findings were consistent with age-related organ deterioration and chronic heart disease.

He said Amaco had a difficult past as before being moved to BSBCC, Amaco spent 18 years in a small cage at a plantation.

The experience left a lasting impact on the sun bear, he said, adding that even after arriving at BSBCC and being given access to forest enclosures, Amaco preferred to stay close to his cage.

“After spending most of his life confined, it was where he felt safest,” he said, explaining that Amaco’s keepers understood this and made sure he received plenty of care and attention.

As the oldest bear at BSBCC, Amaco did things at its own pace, he said, adding that the sun bear was able to spend its final years surrounded by dedicated people.

Dr Wong paid tribute to Amaco in a heartwarming farewell note.

“Thank you, Amaco, for the memories, the lessons and the joy you brought to us. You will always hold a special place in our hearts and will never be forgotten. Rest peacefully, our old friend.”
