MELAKA: A nationwide innovation competition is giving Melaka Methodist Anglo Chinese School (ACS) in Tengkera here a platform to redefine public perception with the support of its alumni.
The century-old institution’s principal, Soh Lay Hui, said the "Vital Factor Consulting Cup 2026" competition reflected the unwavering commitment of former students to give back to the school while helping to dispel the perception that ACS was a school for underachieving and delinquent students.
"It is time for us to change that perception, as ACS has produced many excellent students over the years, and we have continued to record achievements in both academics and co-curricular activities.
"We want the community to recognise that our students are capable of excelling and that our school continues to nurture them to reach their fullest potential," she said in an interview on Friday (June 26).
The competition, themed "MACSian74 Bridge Over Troubled Waters", is spearheaded by the school's Class of 1974 and co-organised with Methodist Girls' Secondary School (MGSS).
Soh added that the event was a reflection of the enduring bond shared by ACS alumni, many of whom had gone on to establish successful careers but remained committed to contributing to their alma mater.
"Our former students are excited to come home and support the school.
"They believe in giving back by creating opportunities for the current students to learn, compete and grow," she said.
Soh also noted that 106 participants from Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Johor and here will take part in the competition on Saturday (June 27) at the school's compound.
46 secondary schools and 33 primary schools will compete for the RM15,000 grand prize, while another 27 participants have registered for the open category.
The competition will expose participants to engineering and design thinking, financial and cost optimisation, project management and teamwork while encouraging them to tackle real-world challenges.
"This competition is not just about winning. It is about nurturing critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, while giving students the confidence to solve problems and innovate," Soh said.
Besides the competition, visitors can also enjoy the school's canteen day as well as face-changing performances by artistes from China's Sichuan Opera.
"We welcome everyone to experience the spirit of ACS, meet our students and see what they are capable of.
"All of us are proud of our heritage and grateful to our alumni for continuing to walk this journey with us," she added.
