KUALA LUMPUR: A 31-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a driver of a sport utility vehicle allegedly lost control in heavy rain and crashed into two motorcycles that had stopped under a bridge along the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) on Thursday (June 25).
The fatal accident occurred at KM15.8 of the expressway, on the stretch from Setiawangsa towards Sungai Besi, at about 4.40pm.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said preliminary investigations found that a 21-year-old local woman driving the SUV is believed to have lost control of the vehicle during heavy rain.
"The vehicle is believed to have skidded onto the left shoulder before crashing into two motorcycles that were sheltering beneath a bridge.
"The impact threw one of the motorcyclists, a 31-year-old local man, about 30m from the bridge. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Another motorcyclist, aged 18, and his pillion rider suffered facial injuries and are receiving treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital," he said in a statement.
The driver of the SUV was unhurt.
ACP Zamzuri said an alcohol screening test conducted on the driver returned a negative result.
"However, she has been detained to assist investigations and was taken to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for a urine screening test.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving," he said.
He urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the Jalan Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-20719999 or the nearest police station.
