KLANG: A total of 270 foreign workers were detained for various immigration offences during a dragnet dubbed Op Mega conducted at two factories in the state.
Selangor Immigration Department deputy director (control) Mohmad Khusairi Kamarudin said one was a plastic component manufacturing factory in Shah Alam and the other a furniture factory in Klang.
He said 50 enforcement officers took part in the raids yesterday, including those from the Employees Provident Fund and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.
“We inspected a total of 586 foreign nationals in both factories.
“Of the total, 270 of them, aged between 18 and 50, were detained to assist in the investigation.
“The suspects are from Bangladesh (191), Pakistan (39), Nepal (34), Myanmar (five) and Sri Lanka (one),” he told a press conference yesterday.
Mohmad Khusairi said those detained were found to have overstayed their visas or to have misused their immigration passes.
“The intelligence-gathering process was conducted over a period of two to three weeks.
“All the suspects will be placed at the Semenyih Immigration depot for further investigation and action,” he added.
He reminded employers to comply with regulations governing the hiring of foreign workers as such operations would continue to be held from time to time.
“Employers must be attentive to the foreign workers they employ and ensure their Temporary Employment Passes (PLKS) are in order and used for the appropriate workplace.
“If there is any violation, we will take the necessary action,” he said.
