SHAH ALAM: Police have successfully disrupted three separate drug distribution operations, seizing over 171kg of marijuana buds.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar announced the details at a press conference at the contingent headquarters on Wednesday (June 24).
The operations occurred between June 17 and 22, following two inspections at Terminal One of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and raids in Negeri Sembilan and Selangor. Four suspects were arrested in connection with these operations, including one local individual.
On June 17, police flagged two pieces of luggage for scanning at KLIA, leading to the arrest of a foreigner in his thirties. Subsequent checks revealed 29.6kg of suspected marijuana buds, estimated to be worth around RM2.37mil.
The following day, on June 18, police in Sepang and Nilai apprehended two men outside a hotel in Bandar Baru Enstek, Negeri Sembilan. An inspection of their luggage uncovered approximately 36 kg of suspected marijuana buds. One of the suspects directed police to a house in Banting, where an additional 72kg of marijuana buds were found, valued at around RM8.64mil.
The third operation took place at KLIA on June 22, when a European man was detained after scans detected suspicious packages in two pieces of luggage. Further checks revealed around 34kg of marijuana buds worth RM2.72mil.
In total, the police seized 171.6 kg of suspected marijuana buds, with an estimated value of RM13.73mi. All arrested suspects had no prior police records.
Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar emphasised that increased checks at strategic gateways, particularly at both terminals of KLIA, have led to a rise in seizures. “Without these measures, we would not have seized such a large quantity," he stated.
From January to June, police reported seizing a total of 653.6 kg of marijuana buds from KLIA alone, resulting in the arrest of 38 suspects, with 28 of those charged in court.
