AN 11-year-old schoolgirl in Tamil Nadu, India, who was allegedly made to stand outside her classroom for hours because she was menstruating, has led to public outrage, Makkal Osai reported.
The Year Six pupil’s parents said she began having her period while in class at the state-run school in Chennai.
The class teacher, a woman, who was informed about it told her to stand along the corridor as her presence in the classroom would cause a foul odour.
The girl was made to stand outside for four hours, the parents said in a police report lodged against the teacher.
After the incident went viral, state ministers and national political leaders expressed outrage over the incident. The parents called for stern action to be taken against the teacher.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janatha Party women’s wing leader Vanathi Seenivasan jumped into the fray, calling on the Tamil Nadu state government to do more to combat such mindsets.
