KUALA LUMPUR: Distance has made family moments more precious for Norhazwani Che Wahid, which is why she will always cherish the Fathers Day walk at Taman Botani Perdana with her parents.
The 31-year-old homestay operator, who is based here, was joined by her father Che Wahid Awang, 60, and mother Ramlah Arifin, 57, visiting from Terengganu.
The family rarely gets to spend quality time together after Norhazwani moved out following her marriage.
As the eldest of four siblings, she said every reunion with her parents has become increasingly meaningful.
“Since I got married, we only meet once a month when I go back to visit them, most of the time we chat over the phone,” she said, adding that sharing stories and spending time together helps strengthen the family bond.
“Every meeting feels precious because time spent together cannot be repeated.”
Norhazwani described her father, a retired general assistant, as a hardworking and loving person who always made time for his children.
Her memories were filled with the happy times they enjoyed during family outings, shared meals and tending the garden.
“My father loved joking with us,” she said.
Growing older and taking on more responsibilities has changed her daily routine, leaving less time together, but the father and daughter remain close.
“Our relationship has never changed. The difference is that back then, we lived under the same roof and could talk every day.”
Norhazwani considers herself fortunate to have had many opportunities to spend time with her parents over the years.
She said simple activities such as family outings remain important in an age when many people struggle to find time for their loved ones because of work and other commitments.
Reflecting on the values her father instilled in her, she said one lesson stood out above all others.
“He always reminded us not to be arrogant, not to be stingy and to help others whenever we can.
“He also taught us to do charity, no matter how small the amount. What matters is sincerity, not the value.”
This Fathers Day, Norhazwani has a simple message for her father.
“Thank you for all your sacrifices, guidance and love throughout our lives. You never seemed to know the meaning of being tired.
“I pray that my father will always be blessed with good health and a long life.”
