Tyre blowout believed to be cause of crash involving SUV on Jalan Kepong

PETALING JAYA: A tyre blowout is believed to have caused a crash involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) along Jalan Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, earlier this month.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the incident occurred at about 12.30am on June 6 and involved a 26-year-old local man.

“Initial investigations found that the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle after the front right tyre and rear left tyre burst, causing the vehicle to skid and crash into a road divider,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 17).

The crash caused damage to the front section of the vehicle, including the bumper, bonnet, headlights, fender, rims and tyres.

No injuries were reported.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said police detected a one-minute viral video circulating on social media showing the incident.

He added that at about 1.15am on the same day, a Sentul district police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) team conducting crime prevention patrols spotted the vehicle being driven in a suspicious and dangerous manner along Jalan Kepong.

“The vehicle was later stopped in front of a premises in Jalan Barat, Jinjang Utara.

“Checks revealed that the driver had no prior criminal record and a urine screening test returned negative results,” he said.

The vehicle was subsequently seized for further investigation.

ACP Mohd Zamzuri said police confirmed that the viral video was related to the same crash and a police report was lodged on June 8 after the vehicle was impounded.

The case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to maintain proper control of a vehicle, resulting in an accident.

Those with information on the incident are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or the nearest police station.
