A FARMER in Hebei, China, claimed to have gotten rid of the gamey smell in mutton just by feeding his goats durians, reported China Press.
Footage of goats in a pen munching on the king of fruits went viral online and became a source of envy for durian lovers.
“They live better than human beings. For the first time in my life, I wished I were a goat,” one Internet user said.
The farmer, Zhao, runs a business selling Grade A durians from Thailand.
He would import between 150 and 200 boxes at a time at a wholesale price of around 52 yuan (RM31.10) per kg.
During transport and storage, some durians would turn bad or fail to ripen.
Determined not to sell substandard fruit to customers and yet unwilling to waste them, Zhao began feeding them to his goats in 2024.
While the 30 goats he keeps normally feed on grass, Zhao gives them durians, watermelons and bananas as treats three times a week.
To Zhao’s surprise, the quality of mutton he produced improved tremendously.
The meat became tender and sweet and the gamey odour often associated with mutton was gone, he claimed.
Selling at 100 yuan (RM59.82) per kg, Zhao would sell out quickly on slaughter day due to the quality of his mutton.
