Police to record statements from witnesses over grenade blast

SUNGAI PETANI: Police will record statements from several witnesses to assist in the investigation into an explosion that killed two army personnel during a training exercise at Hobart Camp in Gurun on Tuesday (June 16).

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said the department has opened a sudden death report investigation into the incident and will seek cooperation from all quarters to complete the investigation.

"Both victims were army personnel undergoing heavy weapons training. We will open an investigation paper classified as sudden death.

"We will secure the cooperation of all parties to conduct an investigation at the scene, and we will also record statements from witnesses who were present at the time," he told reporters when met at the Forensic Department of the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) here.

The army earlier confirmed that an incident occurred during a grenade-throwing exercise under the Combat Enhancement Training of the First Squadron, Royal Malaysian Engineers Regiment (RAJD), of the Second Infantry Division, at Hobart Camp, Gurun, at about 10.57am on Tuesday.

The two personnel involved, Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar from the Sixth Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip from the First Squadron of the Royal Malaysian Engineers Regiment (RAJD), sustained injuries from the blast during the exercise.

Both personnel were taken to HSAH for treatment, but were pronounced dead while en route to the hospital.

The remains of both victims were subsequently sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem. – Bernama
