Tun Fuad honoured for nation-building contributions

KOTA KINABALU: The late Tun Mohd Fuad Stephens was honoured for his contributions to Sabah's independence and Malaysia's formation at a commemorative event in Kota Kinabalu.

National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang, who officiated the event on Monday (June 15), highlighted Fuad's role in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and safeguarding Sabah’s rights.

“Tun Fuad’s struggle laid the foundation for a nation built on understanding, justice and mutual respect,” said Aaron.

He said the late leader introduced the name "Sabah" and recognised the Kaamatan Festival, enhancing state identity.

Aaron said that Fuad also founded the United Kadazan National Organisation and prioritised national unity over political interests.

He died in an air crash on June 6, 1976, shortly after leading Parti Berjaya to victory in April.

“Let us continue the legacy of Huguan Siou (Paramount leader in Kadazandusun) in our lives. May Tun Fuad Stephens’ spirit guide us towards a more united, peaceful and prosperous nation,” he said.

The programme, held in Kota Kinabalu, forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing effort to preserve historical memory and strengthen the agenda of nationhood through recognition of the country’s past leaders.
