PETALING JAYA: PAS has agreed to reappoint Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin as Opposition Leader, says its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang.
He said the decision was reached after the party consulted not only its own MPs but also lawmakers from parties aligned with Perikatan Nasional.
“We did not consider PAS alone. We also considered the views of MPs from Reset.
“Therefore, PAS has decided on Hamzah as Opposition Leader,” he said during the Reset Convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, yesterday.
The Larut MP previously lost the Opposition Leader post after being expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13.
Abdul Hadi also confirmed that Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar would remain in his role as Perikatan chairman.
Ahmad Samsuri was previously named as the Opposition Leader by the Perikatan supreme council to replace Hamzah.
In his speech, Abdul Hadi also indicated possible political realignments, saying several prominent political figures, including former state executive councillors, are expected to join the party in Negri Sembilan.
“We will make a change – one that will mobilise our party machinery and help save the country,” he added.
On newly-formed Parti Wawasan Negara, Abdul Hadi said that Perikatan’s collaboration with the party was intended to strengthen unity among opposition and Muslim-based parties, rather than to gain political power.
He added that the Reset initiative reflected efforts to advance “ummah unity” through greater cooperation under the opposition umbrella.
He said a broader coalition would increase the number of winnable seats, stressing that the goal is to “save the country, not to conquer it”.
Speaking to reporters later, Ahmad Samsuri said Wawasan Negara would contest the upcoming state elections in Johor and Negri Sembilan, adding that the party would use the Perikatan logo in both elections.
The Johor polls will be held on July 11 while the Negri Sembilan polls will be held on Aug 1.
