KUALA LUMPUR: The MyDigital ID registration system at kiosks will be upgraded with facial biometric verification as part of efforts to strengthen identity security and prevent misuse, says the National Security Council (NSC).
It said real-time facial biometric verification against the database of the National Registration Department will be conducted during the registration process.
“This measure is aimed at strengthening the accuracy of identity verification while reducing the risk of identity misuse and unauthorised access,” it said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
Existing users will also be required to undergo periodic facial biometric reverification as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the integrity and security of their digital identities are continuously safeguarded.
The security enhancements will be implemented in phases at all MyDigital ID kiosks, with maintenance work scheduled until 6am tomorrow.
The NSC said that during the kiosk upgrade period, MyDigital ID registration can still be completed via mobile phones by downloading the MyDigital ID app from the App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery.
“The increasing use of digital services by the public, businesses and government agencies has made the need to protect digital identities more critical amid threats such as online fraud, identity impersonation, data theft and cyber exploitation,” said the statement.
In this regard, MyDigital ID plays a key role in the national digital identity ecosystem by facilitating more secure and trusted identity verification across various public and private sector digital services.
