Govt to finish up current MyKad stocks, new MyKad still pending

PUTRAJAYA: Existing stock of MyKads will still be used as long as the stock is available, while the launch of the new updated cards remains pending, says the Home Ministry.

Its minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said existing stock will be used despite the expiry of the supply contract on June 1.

“We will continue issuing passports and identity cards using the existing stock until it is exhausted.

“The fact that a new contract has begun does not mean we should destroy stock that is still available,” he said when met after a ministerial monthly assembly on Monday (June 8).

He said around 35,000 applications were received monthly for holders who had reached the age of 12.

The minister said the transition into the newer cards would be managed in a practical and cost-effective manner to avoid wastage of government resources.

Regarding the launch date of the 10-year passport, Saifuddin said that an announcement would be made at the appropriate time.
