Fire razes seven-decade-old building in Yong Peng

YONG PENG: Some 80% of the over seven-decade-old Yong Peng MCA building along Jalan Nipah was destroyed in a fire here.

Yong Peng fire station operations commander Muhammad Amier Syah Hamzah said the department received a distress call about the incident at about 8.28pm on Saturday (June 6).

"Upon receiving the call, two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) engines and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) unit, along with 14 firefighters from the Yong Peng and Ayer Hitam fire stations, were deployed to the scene.

"The blaze destroyed approximately 80% of the overall structure," he said in a statement.

He added that no injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished by about 9.56pm.

Meanwhile, caretaker health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon, who is also the incumbent Yong Peng assemblyman, said the building holds many special memories.

"The building, a structure that has stood for more than 70 years, is not just a party office, but one of the most iconic landmarks of Yong Peng New Village.

"This building holds the memories of countless people and has witnessed Yong Peng's journey through the years.

"I am filled with sadness, but I firmly believe that what is truly precious is not merely the building itself, but the spirit of unity, perseverance and service to the community that it represents," said Ling, who is also MCA Youth chief.
