KOTA KINABALU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is inviting more partners for the Ihsan Food Bank (i-FB) initiative to help reach more targeted groups.
Its minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the initiative, which started as a pilot project last December, is part of a national agenda to strengthen the Malaysia Food Bank Programme.
“We hope to get more participation from the public and private sectors to get on board this project as it aims to reduce the burdens in terms of food costs and create more awareness on food waste among other things,” he said after the launch of the i-FB@KFC project here, Sunday (June 7).
QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd became the latest partner, where KFC outlets would coordinate the standardised packaging of unsold access food so they remain clean and safe for distribution.
“We hope more people can jump on board with our project and help achieve the objective this was designed for,” said Armizan.
Armizan said the initiative hopes to transform the way communities care for one another, to reduce food wastage and encourage ‘food rescue’ so that excess food can be packed hygienically to be given to those who need it.
He said, according to a study by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), a third or 1.3 billion metric tonnes of food globally are wasted.
