KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating claims that a 63-year-old woman detained by Nigerian authorities for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the country was set up by her daughter.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said efforts were being made to trace the woman’s daughter.
“The allegation that she was set up by her daughter is being investigated,” he said when contacted yesterday, Bernama reported.
He said Bukit Aman was informed of the arrest by Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Foreign media reported that the woman was detained by Nigerian authorities on May 17 after allegedly attempting to smuggle 31kg of Canadian Loud cannabis into the country via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The naturalised Malaysian citizen is understood to have arrived in Nigeria on a flight from Thailand via Dubai.
She is believed to have travelled from Malaysia to Thailand before heading to Nigeria, carrying two large suitcases containing the illicit substance.
During questioning, the woman claimed that the trip had been sponsored by her daughter and that she had stayed in Thailand for about two weeks before receiving the package for delivery to Nigeria.
