KUALA TERENGGANU: A businessman pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (June 3) to a charge of dangerous driving that caused the death of a teenage boy in an accident on Jalan Losong Feri in May.

Asrizal Hisham Khalid, 43, was charged with dangerously driving a Volkswagen GTI car that caused the death of Wah Han Keong, 18, at 3.36pm, on May 19.

The charge was brought under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and is punishable under the same section and act which provides for a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than 10 years and a fine of not less than RM20,000 to RM50,000, if convicted.

In addition, the accused also faces a disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of not less than five years from the date of conviction.

Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Shariffuddin granted Asrizal Hisham bail of RM10,000 with one surety and imposed an additional condition that the accused's driving licence be suspended until the case is heard.

The court set Aug 3 as the date for re-mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Ameena Azzuhriyyah Ahmad while the accused was represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).

Previously, it was reported that a Volkswagen GTI car carrying a family of five lost control and skidded into a Public Works Department (JKR) pole in the middle of the road.

The car then entered the opposite lane and hit a van carrying the victim and his father.

The accident caused the JKR pole to fall and penetrate the van before impaling the victim's head. - Bernama
