THE decline in the price of 916 gold prompted many people returning to Kota Baru, Kelantan, for the recent Hari Raya Aidiladha holiday to take the opportunity to buy jewellery.
Checks by Sinar Harian at Pasar Siti Khadijah found that several goldsmiths were seeing an unusually large number of customers.
Wan Nur Izzati Wan Ismail, 27, who works in Selangor, said she did not want to miss the chance to buy gold after learning that prices had fallen.
“I have been meaning to gift my youngest sister a gold chain and pendant for her birthday and graduation,” she said.
Accountant Meria Marsheema Azman, 33, said gold is still her choice as a savings instrument despite the uncertain economic situation.
It has a more stable value in the long term and can be easily liquidated if needed, she said.
“That is why I choose to save some of my money in the form of gold.”
> A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly using a rented house in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, over the past year to process ketum, Harian Metro reported.
Authorities raided the house and found a refrigerator used to store packages of ketum water.
General Operations Force Southeast Brigade commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said 100 packets of ketum water were seized.
The ketum leaves was supplied by someone identified as Man, he said.
“Every time he needed ketum leaves, the suspect would contact Man,” he said.
“The ketum leaves would be cooked using two pots, which could produce about 200 packets of ketum water. This would be sold to customers at RM10 per pack.”
