GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) has announced two days of free ferry services tomorrow and on June 1 for Malaysians in conjunction with the Wesak Day and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s official birthday celebrations.
SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the free fares cover return trips between the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal and the Raja Tun Uda Terminal here.
"This initiative reflects the continued commitment of SPPP and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) to facilitating travel for Malaysians, particularly during festive periods, to ease traffic congestion and encourage the use of more sustainable and efficient public transport,” he said in a statement on Saturday (May 30).
Yeoh said 7,127 foot passengers and 2,221 two-wheeler users used the ferry service for return journeys during last year’s Wesak Day celebration.
He said the figure contributed to the ferry service’s overall statistics last year, which recorded 2,347,066 foot passengers and 784,065 two-wheeler passengers.
He hopes the free ferry initiative would help ease the people’s financial burden while giving the public an opportunity to celebrate the two occasions more meaningfully.
Yeoh said SPPP and PPSB remain committed to taking various measures to ensure smooth ferry operations, with comfort, safety and customer satisfaction continuing to be prioritised. - Bernama
