PETALING JAYA: The disruption to the Malaysia Immigration System (MyIMMs) was not due to a cybersecurity attack, says the Home Ministry.
It said that the over three-hour disruption was due to an “internal technical issue” and that the system has since been fully restored.
“The ministry would like to emphasise that the disruption did not involve any cybersecurity incident. No data breaches, loss, or corruption were recorded, and all information stored in the system remains secure and protected.
“The ministry acknowledges that critical systems operating continuously and handling high transaction volumes require ongoing monitoring and improvements to ensure stability and resilience remain at an optimal level.
"At the same time, the upgrade process of the MyIMMs system to MyNIISe is being carried out in stages to enhance capacity, capability, and service quality for users, and this incident has been taken into account in ongoing operations.
"In this regard, the Immigration Department of Malaysia is implementing several strengthening measures, including increasing system storage and infrastructure capacity, enhancing real-time monitoring mechanisms, improving contingency recovery plans, and accelerating the MyIMMs upgrade project to improve system resilience and reliability in the future,” it said.
The National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe) is a new system meant to replace MyIMMs by 2028.
It also apologised for the disruption and that it appreciated the patience and cooperation given by travellers.
“The ministry and the Immigration Department remain committed to ensuring that public service delivery and border management are carried out smoothly, securely, and effectively,” it said.
A system crash occurred yesterday, leaving thousands of travellers stuck in long queues across entry points in the country.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said yesterday the incident happened at about 5am and lasted until 8.45am due to a technical issue at the MyIMMs data centre.
Zakaria said such disruptions may recur until the NIISe system is up fully.
