KOTA KINABALU: Restoration of the fire-damaged Kota Kinabalu Community Hall remains in the planning phase to ensure repairs comply with strict heritage conservation standards, says Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin (pic).
Rebutting claims by Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee that the site had been neglected, Jafry clarified Tuesday (Sept 8) that the Sabah Heritage Council and Sabah Museum Department are actively guiding Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) through the process.
“All works must comply with the Sabah Heritage Enactment 2017 and appropriate conservation principles,” he said Tuesday (Sept 8).
Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) is currently finalizing technical documentation, scope of works, and restoration methodologies before determining total project costs and applying for state funding.
On Monday (Sept 7), Yong called on Sabah Heritage Council to explain why nothing had been done to restore the city’s gutted Community Hall, which is among 19 sites and buildings gazetted as a heritage site.
