JOHOR BARU: All Johor assemblymen have been sent letters informing them to attend a one-day state assembly meeting on June 22, fuelling talk that state elections could be announced by the end of the month.
Bekok assemblyman Tan Chong said he received the notification at about 9am on Friday (May 29).
The previous state assembly meeting was held from April 30 to May 4.
Meanwhile, Tiram assemblyman Azizul Bachok said he also received the notification.
However, he downplayed the significance of the letter, saying: "If there is going to be an election, there will be a process that needs to be followed including having an audience with the state ruler," he said.
Johor Jaya assemblyman Liow Chai Tung said that state assembly meetings had never been held twice within such a short span.
"Why is it for one day and there is even a Question Time session? Actually, the state assembly can be dissolved even without calling for a sitting," she said, adding that there was unlikely to be any other agenda except for a dissolution.
The 15th Johor Election was held in March 2022, where Barisan Nasional secured 40 of 56 seats, Pakatan Harapan (12), Perikatan Nasional (three) and Muda (one).
The Johor assembly will dissolve automatically in March 2027 and polls are required to be held within 60 days.
Johor Barisan has announced its intention to go solo in the state polls.
