KAJANG: The two suspected members of an armed robbery gang who were shot by the police recently had around 30 prior cases between them.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the duo were initially flagged by a patrolling team from Bukit Aman.

The suspects were ordered to stop by policemen in the Bandar Seri Putera area in Bangi late Monday night, but they refused to comply.

“The police initially trailed their car for around 500m where they then shouted to them to stop. All officers were using police vests to identify themselves as policemen.

“After ignoring orders to stop, the suspects then drove away, leading to a chase,” he said.

The chase ended after a collision at the side of the road, where the suspects then fired at the police.

“The police team was then forced to return fire,” said Comm Kumar.

Inspections of the car after the shooting led to the discovery of a large amount of home-breaking equipment and weapons.

Also recovered from the vehicle were a revolver and six unfired live rounds of ammunition, together with several number plates.

“Both suspects, aged 25 and 46 years old, had around 30 recorded criminal cases between them, including armed robbery, house break-ins and vehicle thefts.

“We are also checking the number plates that were found in their vehicle, as they were not registered under their names,” he said, adding that the vehicle itself was also not registered to either suspect.

Checks showed that the group, which is said to have around 10 members, would target homes located near highways, especially those without CCTV.

The group was also known to have been active since last year and was responsible for cases in Selangor and Melaka.

“The group is also believed to be aggressive and would injure victims when threatened.

“We are still in the midst of identifying the exact number of cases linked to this group and losses suffered by victims.

“Efforts to trace other members of the group are also underway,” he said.
