BUKIT MERTAJAM: In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha tomorrow, the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry will distribute 36 sacrificial cows to 27 selected mosques, surau, residents’ associations and NGOs here.

Rosly Yusof, special officer to the minister and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim, said the programme began with five cows in 2024 and increased to 17 last year.

“Five cows will be used for a kenduri kampung (village feast) programme at Masjid Merbau Kudung on May 31,” he said after a symbolic handover ceremony yesterday.

Rosly said applications for korban contributions were not formally opened, but requests were received annually from surau, mosques and NGOs.

“When requests came in, we informed the agencies and secured contributions where possible,” he said.

Desa Alma Jaya Village Development and Security Committee representative Yaakob Abu Bakar, 72, said they received one cow for Aidiladha under the programme.

He said the animal would be slaughtered at a nearby surau, with the meat distributed to eligible families and orphans in the area.

“We received several cows from others, and it should be enough for the community in our area,” added Yaakob.

Penang Islamic Welfare and Development Organisation representative Ben Ooi, 44, said this was the first time the body had received a sacrificial cow since its formation last November.

“The meat will be distributed to converts identified by us,” he said.
