Hotel guest dies of suspected drug overdose


KUALA LUMPUR: Eight men were detained during a raid on a private party at a five-star hotel here after a guest died of a suspected drug overdose.

Police also seized drugs in the raid early yesterday morning.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Hoo Chang Hook said the raid was carried out after police received a report regarding the death of a local man at the emergency department of Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL), where he had been taken from the hotel.

Acting on obtained information, a team from the Brickfields Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, led by Insp Mohd Hanif, raided the hotel room occupied by the deceased at about 4am.

“We detained eight men comprising two locals and six foreigners – two Singaporeans and one each from Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, and China.

“We also seized a transparent plastic packet believed to contain 1.5g of ketamine and three ecstasy pills weighing 0.7g, with an estimated total value of RM225,” ACP Hoo said when contacted.

Initial investigations revealed that the 31-year-old victim was brought down from the hotel room by his friend at about 3.10am after he lost consciousness before being taken to the emergency department at HKL.

Police are currently awaiting laboratory results on the cause of death.
