CYBERJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hopes the haze situation will improve to allow the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations to proceed smoothly.
“We are preparing to celebrate National Day, followed by Malaysia Day. Let us pray that the haze situation will be brought under better control so that the celebrations can be held,” he said when launching Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) 80th anniversary celebrations here yesterday.
His remarks came as the haze situation worsened across the country, with 29 areas recording unhealthy air quality.
It included several areas in the Klang Valley, northern and southern states and Sarawak.
According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Serian in Sarawak recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) at 181 as of 6pm yesterday, followed by Johan Setia in Selangor and Sri Aman in Sarawak, both at 173.
Department of Environment (DOE) deputy director-general (Development) Azuri Azizah Saedon said the deterioration was concentrated mainly along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and several areas in Sarawak, following the movement of haze from various directions.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the government would review the scale and location of the National Day celebrations on Aug 31 following the haze affecting several areas, including Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak.
He said the decision was made during the Cabinet meeting after taking into account updates on the haze situation from MetMalaysia.
