Alleged Rames gang leader arrested on flight to India, Bukit Aman says


PETALING JAYA: The alleged leader of the Rames Gang, believed to be behind a series of armed robberies in Sungai Petani, has been arrested with the help of Thai and Indian authorities.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the suspect was arrested last Friday (May 22) while on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, to Hyderabad, India.

“The suspect was arrested with the help of the Indian and Thai authorities before being brought back to Malaysia.

“The suspect, who has been remanded until May 29, is also being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for two separate incidents in the Padang Serai and Bedong areas in Kedah in February and August 2024,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Comm Kumar also expressed the police’s appreciation to their Thai and Indian counterparts for the cooperation that led to the arrest.

On Dec 30 last year, 20 members of the gang were charged at the Sungai Petani Sessions Court with being members of an organised criminal group.
