Thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for seven states until 5pm


PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across seven states, effective until 5pm on Sunday (May 24).

On the east coast, the severe weather is expected to affect several districts in Terengganu, namely Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Dungun and Kemaman.

In Pahang, the weather alert covers Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Kuantan and Rompin.

Residents in Kuala Langat and Sepang in Selangor, as well as Seremban, Port Dickson and Jempol in Negeri Sembilan, should brace for storms.

Further south, the warning encompasses Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru in Johor.

In Sarawak, the affected areas include Kuching (Kuching), Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit and Selangau), Mukah (Dalat and Mukah), Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu and Miri (Subis and Miri).

For Sabah, the alert includes Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort and Tambunan), Pantai Barat, Tawau, Sandakan (Tongod, Telupid and Beluran) and Kudat.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.

A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.

The notice was officially issued by the department at 2.15pm on Sunday.
