Five held in Taiping over Telekom Malaysia cable theft

IPOH: Five men believed to be part of a syndicate involved in stealing Telekom Malaysia (TM) underground cables were arrested during a police patrol in Taiping on Sunday morning (May 17).

Taiping OCPD Asst Comm Abd Malek Ismail said personnel from the Taiping district police headquarters came across the suspects at about 7.30am while conducting crime-prevention patrols.

“Police acted swiftly and arrested five men aged between 35 and 39,” he said in a statement Tuesday (May 19).

He said police also seized a red Daihatsu Delta V57A lorry and several tools believed to have been used in the theft.

ACP Abd Malek added that two of the suspects were caught cutting the cables, while the remaining three were seen loading them into the lorry during the raid.

“The group is believed to be an active syndicate involved in cable theft cases around the Taiping district, targeting underground TM cables.

“Police are also tracking down several other syndicate members who are still at large,” he said.

The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

ACP Abd Malek urged members of the public, especially Taiping residents, to continue channelling information to the police to help maintain public safety and order.

He said police would continue to take proactive measures to ensure Taiping remains safe for residents and visitors alike.
