King grants audience to Anwar after PM raises possibility of snap polls

PETALING JAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted an audience to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Istana Negara on Sunday (May 17).

Also present at the meeting was Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, according to a statement posted on His Majesty’s official Facebook page.

The meeting came a day after Anwar warned that a snap general election could be called if divisions within the unity government continued to widen.

Previously, the Prime Minister said elections could extend beyond Johor and involve states such as Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Pahang and Penang if agreements within the coalition were not honoured.

Anwar said he would discuss the matter with Pakatan leadership and stressed that political stability was important for effective governance.

The Prime Minister said this while speaking at the Pakatan convention in Johor Baru on Saturday (May 16).
