KUCHING: Sarawak has set up an anti-vandalism committee to coordinate strategies to prevent destruction and defacement of telecommunications infrastructure, the state assembly heard.

State Deputy Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Liwan Lagang said vandalism cases statewide caused an estimated RM11.34mil in losses last year.

To tackle the issue more effectively, he said the committee would strengthen cooperation and community involvement through awareness programmes and encourage the public to report suspicious activities at utility and telecommunications facilities.

"We will also take legal action against those found committing vandalism.

"In addition, integrated operations called Ops Lusuh are carried out regularly at scrap premises with police and enforcement agencies," he told Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman (GPS-Tupong) during question time on Friday (May 15).

Liwan said the public can report vandalism to the police or lodge complaints with service providers.

He said complaints can also be made to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at aduan.mcmc.gov.my or 1-800-188-030, or by contacting the talikhidmat.sarawak.gov.my portal, or calling 082-555 999 for further action.
