No bail for trio in side-eye assault case

Explosive reaction: The trio allegedly attacked a man for allegedly side-eyeing them at a restaurant.

KUALA LUMPUR: Three men have been charged for causing grievous hurt to someone who is said to have given them the side-eye at a restaurant in Kepong.

Carpenter Wong Weng Luen, 49, technician Lai Kae Bin, 33, and memorial centre worker Wan Ken Fei, 30, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before Sessions Court judge Noridah Adam here yesterday.

The men were jointly charged with intentionally causing grievous hurt to Andrew Teh Tiek Hua, 49, at a restaurant on Jalan Kepong, Metro Prima, at 2am on May 7.

The charge was under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, and fine or whipping can also be imposed if convicted.

DPP Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal did not offer bail on grounds that the offence was serious.

“If bail is granted to these accused persons, there is a risk they may flee and interfere with the victim in this case,” she said.

Lawyer S. Narasimhan, who represented the accused, however sought bail saying they had fully cooperated with the authorities and that the court had discretion to do so.

“Although this case has gone viral, it does not automatically mean the accused should be denied bail. In this matter, the accused surrendered themselves and should be allowed to be released on bail,” he said.

The judge denied bail and fixed mention for June 15.

A CCTV recording went viral on social media showing three persons attacking a man, after allegedly claiming he had been staring at them at a restaurant in Kepong.
