JOHOR BARU: A 30-year-old man here is dismayed at learning that the ownership of his car had been transferred to a car dealership company in Kuala Lumpur without his consent.
Businessman Ong Guan Quan said he found out that the car had been transferred to another owner in July last year, about two months after the ownership change was made without his knowledge.
“I was taken aback when I saw another name being registered as the owner of my car when I checked the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) online portal, MyJPJ.
“I have never sold the car or its registration number, and out of nowhere, I found out I am no longer the owner,” he told a press conference arranged by Johor MCA Youth public services and complaints bureau chief Henry Mok on Friday (May 15).
Ong, who bid RM13,999 for the car’s JXB9999 registration number, said he had brought the matter to JPJ and filed a police report.
“The police inspected the car and came out with an etching report confirming that the car in my possession is indeed the same one I bought.
“I am now holding on to the report, along with the police report I filed earlier, as proof that I am the owner of the car pending further action from the authorities,” he said, adding that he hopes the Transport Ministry will seriously look into the matter.
He said the change in ownership also made it impossible for him to renew his road tax and insurance.
“Despite having the car physically, I am unable to use it much as I do not want to get into trouble for driving a vehicle with expired road tax and insurance,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mok urged the ministry to thoroughly investigate the matter and find a solution immediately.
“This is a serious matter, and the fact that it could happen is absolutely appalling. It is unfair to the victim, who spent so much to buy the car, only to be told he no longer owns it.
He also urged the public to check the ownership status of their vehicles from time to time.
“I advise everyone to do so as a precaution, as this will allow them to at least try to do something about it early,” he said.
On April 16, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong also arranged a press conference to highlight a similar incident.
At the press conference in Kuala Lumpur, the victim said he was shocked to find that the ownership of his car and its registration number had been transferred to an unknown owner.
