PETALING JAYA: A DAP veteran has warned its leaders against publicly criticising the party and Penang government at the risk of weakening the unity government and its standing in the state.
Former Penang executive councillor Datuk Seri Phee Boon Poh said while differing views and constructive criticism are important in a democracy, constant public pressure within the party could erode public confidence and trust.
“As someone who has served the party and the Penang government for over three decades, I feel compelled to remind all leaders, especially senior leaders, that the people expect DAP to provide stability, mature leadership and responsible governance… not continuous public attacks against our own party-led state government,” he said in a statement on Friday (May 15).
He said the party’s hold on Penang and the unity government’s would be weakened unless DAP leaders exercise maturity, discipline and collective responsibility.
Phee also commended Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for his patience, restraint and professionalism in leading the state despite repeated internal challenges.
“If there were genuine concerns regarding government matters, I also believe such issues should first be raised through the appropriate internal discussions and party-government channels,” he said.
Phee pointed out that internal party disputes being aired publicly confused grassroots supporters who want to see leaders solve problems together.
“It is difficult for the grassroots and public to understand why certain matters were not first properly discussed internally through the established avenues instead of being repeatedly raised in the public arena and state assembly,” he said.
