Stricter safety SOP after fatal Perak crash

KUALA LUMPUR: The fatal accident that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel near Teluk Intan in Perak last year has led to stricter enforcement of the standard operating procedure (SOP), says Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.

The Inspector-General of Police said protocol enforcement, especially involving large convoys, has been strengthened.

“There have been more improvements and revisions to the SOP and rules so that we can reduce such accidents,” he said after the closing of the Special Dialogue 2026 yesterday.

He added that new assets and improvements already in use in police vehicles have also helped improve safety.

“We have also provided assistance and insurance to the families of the victims, which was done accordingly,” he said.

In the incident last year, nine FRU personnel died after a lorry transporting sand crashed head-on into their vehicle along the Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam route.
